Here's how it works. Through the co-op local produce, meats, breads and fair trade items are done as a pre-planned purchase in bulk. The co-op then turns those savings over to local Utahns for up to a 50% savings on great food. The items are set up as a share ( a share being fruits, vegetables, meats). Local Utahns login to the Utah co-op site each month an determine how many shares they want to buy (no commitment on what months you want to buy a share).
Just to give you an idea of the great savings 1 share cost $24.00 and you get the following (meat, fruit and vegetables choices change each month based on the season):
a share for vegetarians and produce lovers
- 2 lbs. Green Grapes
- 5 Apples
- 3 Grapefruits
- 2 Red bell peppers
- 1 Head red leaf lettuce
- 3 Cucumbers
- 5 Roma tomatoes
- 5 lbs. Red Potatoes
- 1 lb. lean ground beef
- 4 6oz. boneless pork chops
- 2 lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts
- 1 lb. beef stew meat
Ok, now that I have pitched the Utah Food Co-op idea on to the real reason I like sharing this resource. . . . It makes a great gift for those in need. Know of a local family, friend or co-worker who is struggling just to put food on the table? You can contact the Utah Food Co-op and purchase a gift certificate in the name of the person you would like one or more food shares sent to.
I do believe the typical food share can feed a family of two or one adult with one to two small children for a week.
